Format Guides

Learn about file formats, when to use each one, and how to convert between them.

File Conversion Fundamentals

File conversion is the process of transforming data from one format to another. Each format uses a different method to encode information — images use pixel data or vector math, documents use layout models (fixed vs. flow), and media files use codecs optimized for different playback scenarios.

Lossless vs. Lossy: Lossless formats (PNG, FLAC, ZIP) preserve every bit of original data. Lossy formats (JPG, MP3, MP4) trade some fidelity for dramatically smaller file sizes. Choose lossless when quality matters most; choose lossy when file size and compatibility are priorities.

Container vs. Codec: Video and audio files use containers (MP4, MKV) that hold streams encoded with codecs (H.264, AAC). Conversion between containers usually re-encodes the streams, which can degrade quality. Where possible, choose a target format that supports your source codec to avoid transcoding.

Open vs. Proprietary: Open formats (PNG, WebP, FLAC, OGG) are specification-free and widely supported. Proprietary formats (HEIC, AIFF, WMA) may offer better compression or features but require specific software. Converting from proprietary to open formats ensures long-term accessibility.

Documents

Convert between PDF, Word, HTML, Markdown, and other document formats. PDF preserves exact layout for sharing, while DOCX and ODT are editable formats. Use TXT for plain text extraction, HTML for web publishing, and EPUB for e-readers. LibreOffice powers our document engine, handling complex formatting and embedded elements.

Images

Convert JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, SVG, and more. PNG is best for screenshots and graphics with text (lossless). JPG offers the best size-to-quality ratio for photographs. WebP provides 25-35% smaller files than JPG with similar quality. HEIC is Apple's modern format with superior compression but limited compatibility. SVG is infinitely scalable — ideal for logos and icons.

Video

Convert MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM, and other video formats. MP4 with H.264 is the most universally compatible format. Use MOV for Apple ecosystem workflows. MKV supports advanced features like multiple audio tracks and subtitles. AVI is a legacy format with large file sizes. WebM is optimized for web use with HTML5 video.

Audio

Convert MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, and other audio formats. WAV and FLAC are lossless — ideal for editing and archiving. MP3 at 320kbps is nearly indistinguishable from lossless for most listeners. AAC offers slightly better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. FLAC reduces file size by 50-60% compared to WAV with no quality loss.

Spreadsheets

Convert between Excel, CSV, ODS, and Apple Numbers. XLSX is the modern Excel format with full formula and formatting support. CSV is universal for data exchange — every spreadsheet and database application can read and write it. ODS is the open standard used by LibreOffice Calc and Google Sheets.

Presentations

Convert PowerPoint, Keynote, and OpenDocument presentations to PDF and other formats. PPTX supports animations, transitions, and embedded media. When converting to PDF, slides are captured as static pages. ODP is the open standard used by LibreOffice Impress.

Vector

Convert SVG, AI, EPS, and DXF vector files. SVG is the web standard — supported by every modern browser. AI is Adobe Illustrator's native format. EPS is a legacy PostScript-based format. Convert to PDF for universal sharing of vector designs.

E-books

Convert EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, and other ebook formats. EPUB is the most universal format — supported by all e-readers except Kindle. MOBI and AZW3 are Kindle-specific formats. Convert Kindle books to EPUB to read on any device (DRM-protected books cannot be converted).

CAD

Convert AutoCAD DWG, DXF, and DGN files to PDF for universal sharing. DWG is AutoCAD's native binary format. DXF is an open interchange format supported by most CAD software. DGN is used by MicroStation and Bentley systems.
